DENVER – The University of Denver men's tennis team won 4-3 in its season opener last weekend, but suffered a 4-3 defeat to Utah in the Pioneers home opener on Friday night at the Denver Tennis Park.
Doubles:
Utah took courts two and three to secure the doubles point. On court one, the 32
nd-ranked tandem of
James Davis and
Matt Summers earned their first bagel of the season taking the match 6-0 to improve to 2-0 on the campaign. Utah took the second court 6-3, and grabbed court three 8-6 in a tiebreaker to secure the point.
Singles:
Utah made it 2-0 with a straight-set win on court four, but the Pioneers cut the margin to one with
Peter Sallay's first win of the season, 6-4, 6-3. The Utes regained their two-point advantage, earning a straight-set win on court six to make it 3-1.
The Pioneers earned the next two points on the night to even the score up at 3-3.
Nicolas Herrero Cuesta won his first match of the season on court two 7-6 (6), 7-5 to pull Denver to within one and then
Matt Summers improved to 2-0 on the year with a three-set victory by the count of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Davis came from a break down to even up the first set, but ultimately dropped the first set in a tiebreaker on court one. The Barnstaple, England, native responded with a 6-3 victory in the second set to even the match and setup a decisive third set. Utah's Franco Capalbo outlasted Davis 7-5 in the third to take his match and the overall team match.
UP NEXT: Denver heads to Los Angeles for ITA Kickoff Weekend next weekend to take on Pepperdine and the winner/loser of USC or Harvard in a four-team two-day tournament.
