COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Goaltender
Magnus Chrona posted his third consecutive shutout and senior captain
Cole Guttman scored twice to reach 100 career points as the No. 5 Denver Pioneers hockey team defeated Colorado College 4-0 on Saturday night at Robson Arena.
The Pioneers swept the weekend set against their in-state rival, and in doing so, secured the Gold Pan trophy for a third-straight season. Denver has won five consecutive meetings against CC (6-12-3, 3-7-1 NCHC), with each of the last three coming in the form of a shutout.
DU is on a six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) and improved to 16-5-1 overall on the season and 9-3-0 in conference play. With North Dakota's loss on Saturday at Western Michigan, the Pioneers take over sole possession of first place in the NCHC.
McKade Webster and
Sean Behrens also tallied for the Pios, while
Carter Savoie added three assists and
Bobby Brink had two helpers.
The Pioneers outshot the Tigers 81-35 over the weekend, with Chrona making all 16 saves on Saturday. He now has a 183:16 shutout streak, extending his career long. The Stockholm, Sweden, native has started 16 straight games.
DU led 2-0 after the first period, as both goals were created on a strong forecheck that freed the puck and led to a Pioneer with space in the slot. Webster opened the scoring at 6:06 and
Cole Guttman scored his first of the game with 5:15 remaining before the intermission.
Guttman's second tally marked his milestone point, as he became the 101st player in program history to reach 100 in his career and the first since
Jarid Lukosevicius in 2018-19. The Los Angeles, California, native took the puck off the half-wall, split two Tigers and buried a shot short-side just 2:08 into the middle frame. He now has 45 goals and 55 assists in 121 games.
Behrens gave the Pioneers a 4-0 lead just 2:20 into the period after finishing off a cross pass from Brink during a power play. Denver outshot Colorado College 21-6 in the final frame and 41-16 in the contest.
Saturday marked the start of three consecutive road games for DU, as the team now heads to Oxford, Ohio, for two games next weekend at the Miami RedHawks. Friday's contest begins at 5 p.m. MT while Saturday's is at 3 p.m. MT.
