OXFORD, Ohio. – Cole Guttman led the No. 5 Denver Pioneers hockey team to a 5-4 overtime victory against the Miami RedHawks on Friday night at Goggin Ice Center.
The senior captain scored twice in the final 3:03 to help Denver to erase a two-goal deficit and then added the primary assist on
Mike Benning's tap-in game-winner during the 3-on-3 OT.
Cameron Wright also scored twice for the Pioneers, while
Massimo Rizzo, Carter Savoie and
Brett Stapley contributed a pair of assists each.
It was Denver's first overtime win since defeating Omaha 3-2 on Jan. 12, 2019, and it was its first on the road since beating Wisconsin 4-3 on Jan. 4 of that same season.
With DU (17-5-1, 10-3-0 NCHC) trailing 4-2 late in the third period, Denver began its comeback with Guttman deflecting
Sean Behrens' shot from the blue line into the back of the net while goaltender
Magnus Chrona was pulled for the extra attacker. His second marker came with just 11 seconds left, as he shoveled in
Bobby Brink's centering pass top-shelf to force the extra session.
After back-and-forth chances to start the OT session, the Pioneers created a 3-on-1 rush and Guttman held onto the puck long enough to get Benning free ice to work with and an open net to score. It was Benning's third game-winner of the season and his first overtime goal of his career.
For his late-game heroics, Guttman earned his fourth three-point game of the season and is now on a three-game goal streak (5g/1a).
The RedHawks (4-19-2, 1-13-1 NCHC) led 3-2 after the first period and extended their lead to two goals with Red Savage's second marker of the contest 23 seconds into the third frame.
Wright opened the scoring at 11:54 of the first period for DU, but Hampus Rydqvist tallied twice on the power play in a matter of 15 seconds for Miami. The first came with one second remaining on a 5-on-3 before finding twine again from a similar spot at the right circle.
Rydqvist's markers were the first that DU had allowed since Jan. 15 versus Omaha and ended
Magnus Chrona's career-long shutout streak at 198 minutes and 10 seconds, the third-longest in school history. Chrona's streak was the longest in the NCHC this year and the fifth-longest in conference history, bettering the stretch of Minnesota Duluth's Ryan Fanti earlier this season from Nov. 5-19 (188:56).
Chrona finished with 16 saves, as DU outshot Miami 45-20 in the contest.
Wright picked up his second marker with 91 seconds remaining before the first break, but Savage tallied his first of the night with 15 seconds left before the intermission to give Miami the lead that it would hold until almost the very end.
The teams close the weekend and season series on Saturday at 3 p.m. MT at Goggin Ice Center.
