Hensien Wins Women's Giant Slalom at RMISA Invitational

DU skiing finishes alpine portion of meet in second place

PARK CITY, Utah – Senior Katie Hensien won the women's giant slalom for the University of Denver ski team on Sunday at the RMISA Invitational at Park City Mountain Resort.

It was Hensien first collegiate victory and her fourth career podium. She has three top-five finishes after four races this season, which included placing second in the slalom competition of the RMISA Invitational on Thursday in Bozeman, Montana.

Two Pioneers came in the top in the men's GS, as senior Tobias Kogler was fourth and freshman Cooper Cornelius was eighth. Denver gained 148 points on the day and finished second in the alpine portion of the meet with 307 points.

Utah leads the meet with 333 points after winning the team event in both races, gaining 91 points in women's giant slalom and 93 in men's GS. The meet concludes with Nordic races in Fairbanks, Alaska, on Feb. 5-6.

Hensien's win came after she posted the fastest second run in the field at 58.23, making up ground after a top-10 performance in the morning and overtaking early leader Kaja Norbye of Utah. Norbye finished in second place, four-hundredths of a second behind Hensien, and Julia Toiviainen of Westminster was third.

Galena Wardle (12th) and Nora Brand (16th) also scored for DU, and Eleri Smart finished in 24th.

Kogler's top-five result in the men's race was his 27th of his career, and he has now finished in the top 10 in each of the last three races. Cornelius has registered top-10 placements in each of his first two GS races of his college career. Kogler had the second-fastest first run, while Cornelius had the third-best time in the afternoon.

Simon Fournier was the third Denver scorer in 21st. Trey Seymour (24th), Cole Puckett (29th) and Tristan Lane (31st) also finished both runs.

Montana State's Riley Seger won the men's giant slalom. Joachim Lein of Utah was second and Westminster's Mikkel Solbakken was third.

The Pioneers are staying in Park City and resume the Utah Invitational this week. The UU-hosted meet wraps up with alpine races, as giant slalom is set for Monday and slalom will be held on Tuesday.

Utah also leads that meet with 349 points following a strong showing in Nordic races at Soldier Hollow on Jan. 2 and Jan. 6. DU is presently fourth at the UU Invite with 253 points.
