Denver Women’s Soccer Scores Four Unanswered to Down St. Thomas

Four Pioneers score to win 4-1 in final regular-season home match

DENVER – The University of Denver women's soccer team came back from a goal deficit to win 4-1 over St. Thomas in the team's final home match of the regular season on Sunday.

The Tommies scored in the 15th minute to take the early lead, but DU responded with four consecutive goals beginning with graduate student Sami Feller's equalizer in the 38th minute and graduate student Camryn MacMillan's game winner in the 55th minute.

COACH'S NOTES:
From head coach Jeff Hooker: "We were playing very good soccer (in the first half). We just didn't get rewarded. We had one giveaway, and they punished us for; but I thought that we kept going. The things we talked about halftime that made us a little bit better were the types of runs we were making in the box. We talked about covering more ground and being more aggressive, and that's exactly what we did."

About Senior Day: "It was great seeing all of (the seniors) make a good contribution today. Our goal when we started conference play was to try to be the No. 1 seed, and they were all able to contribute toward that goal on the day and for the long term."

SIGNIFICANT STATS:
  • MacMillan's game winner was her second of the season, and she joins sophomore Jadyn Goodrich for the team lead.
  • For the second match in a row and the third time in the last four matches, senior Kaitlyn Glover had a match-best five shots, which equals her career high.
  • DU's 19 shots were its second most of the year, overtaking the previous second-place match set two days prior against Western Illinois. The team's 11 shots on goal matched a season high as well.
  • Sophomore Ella Frost converted on a 75th-minute penalty kick. It was DU's second of the season with Frost scoring both times.
  • With the win and Oral Roberts' loss on Sunday, Denver clinched one of the top two seeds in the Summit League Tournament, guaranteeing its spot as a host for the first weekend of the tournament (October 28-30) and a bye into the semifinals.
FIRST HALF:
12' | Denver had two chances off the first corner of the match. Glover headed junior Addisyn Hyrup's cross right on target, and Feller caught the rebound but had it blocked.

15' | UST scored after a shot from out wide snuck up over redshirt senior Nerea Arrazola and dipped in under the crossbar for just the second goal DU gave up at home in the regular season.

26' | Denver got two shots off inside the box off a free kick, but the UST keeper made both saves.

38' | After an attempted clear by St. Thomas' defenders, the ball landed right in front of an awaiting Feller, who lifted it into the top right corner of the net from 15 yards out.

SECOND HALF:
55' | Junior Jordan Crockett sent the ball up the left sideline, connecting with Hyrup, who sent a cross in toward the back post. MacMillan met the ball just past the post and headed it back toward the net and past the keeper.

58' | MacMillan carried the ball into the box and sent it a yard back to Glover, but she pushed it wide right.

75' | Junior Blythe Sales broke free of two defenders inside the penalty area and was taken down to draw a penalty kick. Frost set up from the mark and converted to give DU a 3-1 lead.

79' | Glover again attempted to score off a Hyrup cross but headed it wide right.

80' | The ball bounced off a UST defender and then the left post, landing just in front of the goal line for junior McKenna Dannenhauer to tap in.
