[10/16] Denver Holds 19-3 Shot Advantage, Plays to Scoreless Draw with UST

The Pioneers head to Pitt to round out a four-match road swing on Monday night

SAINT PAUL, Minn.– The [10/16] University of Denver men's soccer team outshot St. Thomas 19-3, including 12-3 on target, but played to a scoreless draw with the Tommies on Saturday afternoon at South Field. 

SIGNIFICANT STATS:
-          Denver outshot UST 19-3, 12-3 on goal and took nine of the 10 corner kicks on Saturday.
-          The match saw 23 fouls and zero yellow cards in the opening 45 minutes. In the second half, there were 14 fouls and seven yellow cards.
-          Will DeSantis saw his first action of the season in goal, keeping a cleansheet for the Pioneers with three saves. 

KEY MOMENTS:
9' Sam Bassett had an early chance to get Denver on the scoresheet, curling a 22-yard free kick around the wall, but the keeper made a diving save to his right to keep the match scoreless.
35' Kengo Ohira earned a free kick at the top of the D after dribbling through a couple of Tommies. Aidan O'Toole lined up over the free kick and curled it to the top corner, but goalkeeper Tyler Mann picked it out of the corner and sent it over the bar for another Denver set piece.
39' St. Thomas thought it had scored briefly with just over six minutes to play, but Denver's defense held its line and the flag went up for offside.
Halftime
47' St. Thomas took its first shot of the afternoon, a strike from distance in transition from the corner of the box. Will DeSantis made the save comfortably on Carver Tierney's effort.
53' Off a Denver corner, the Pios got four attempts at the goal, but two shots were blocked in-front and Mann made his sixth and seventh saves of the afternoon.
53' Dylan Akau had another good attempt on goal off a cross from Eli Mereness, but his shot was headed away inside the six-yard box by a UST defender. Denver took seven shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
59' Ian Smith got on the end of a Ronan Wynne cross, but his attempt across the frame hit the inside of the far post and popped up right to the chest of the Tommies' keeper.
63' Akau got on the end of a Smith cross a few minutes later, but his shot from just inside the penalty spot rolled up his shin and out top for a goal kick.
76' St. Thomas got back-to-back shots on target for the first time on Saturday afternoon, but DeSantis was able to save them comfortably to keep things scoreless in Minnesota.
90' Denver had a flurry of corners late, but couldn't get on the end of any of them and the match ended in a scoreless draw.

On Monday, Denver will head to nationally-ranked [25/23] Pitt for a 5 p.m. MT kickoff to finish up the program's second four-match road swing of the season.
