Carter Mazur Named NCHC Player of the Month for October

Denver hockey forward is tied for first in the nation with 10 goals

DENVER – University of Denver hockey forward Carter Mazur is the NCHC Player of the Month for October after the National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced its monthly honors on Tuesday.

Mazur is tied for first in the country with 10 goals and ranks tied for ninth in points with 13 after eight games this season. The sophomore is also first in the NCAA with four game-winning goals and tied for first with five power-play tallies.

The Jackson, Michigan, native has scored in six of the eight contests this year, and he has recorded three multi-goal games and has picked up multiple points in four contests. He is currently riding a three-game goal streak where he has registered six markers and one assist in that time.

Mazur is coming off a weekend where he recorded five goals in two games, earning NCHC Player of the Week honors on Monday. He registered his first career three-goal outing on Friday in a 4-0 win at Miami, with each of his markers coming consecutively for the first natural hat trick by a Denver player since Quentin Shore on Nov. 21, 2014 versus Air Force and just the fourth such trick by a Pioneer in the last 24 years. The left wing then tallied the game-tying and game-winning goals on Saturday in the team's 4-2 comeback victory at Miami.

The alternate captain was the first Denver player to have a five-goal weekend since Jarid Lukosevicius also had five tallies in a home set versus Western Michigan on Nov. 2-3, 2018.

This is Mazur's first NCHC Player of the Month award of his career. He was named the NCHC's Rookie of the Month three times last season as a freshman, including in the final month for March/April.

DU sophomore forward Massimo Rizzo was also named a finalist for the NCHC Player of the Month award after leading the conference with 14 points. He ranks second in the nation in scoring and is first in assists with 11 this year.

Rizzo is on a four-game point streak (3g/8a) and is coming off a seven-point weekend. He registered a career-high three assists on Friday at Miami before setting a new personal best the next night with four points (1g/3a).

Senior Magnus Chrona was also a finalist for goaltender of the month, as he owns a 5-2-0 record, 1.90 goals-against average, .960 save percentage and one shutout in seven starts this season.

St. Cloud State's Dominic Basse was named the NCHC Goaltender of the Month while Western Michigan's Ryan McAllister was recognized as Rookie of the Month.

Mazur is now eligible for the National Player of the Month award from the Hockey Commissioners' Association, which will be announced on Wednesday.

UP NEXT: The No. 2 Pioneers continue NCHC play this weekend as they host No. 4 St. Cloud State in a top-five showdown at Magness Arena. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m. MT while Saturday's starts at 6 p.m. MT.
