No. 2 Denver Sweeps Weekend Series at No. 12 North Dakota

Pioneers hockey defeat Fighting Hawks 6-3

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The No. 2 Denver Pioneers hockey team scored three goals in both the second and third periods to defeat the No. 12 North Dakota Fighting Hawks 6-3 on Saturday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Denver (9-3-0, 5-1-0 NCHC) hasn't lost in regulation in the last eight games and picks up its third weekend sweep of the season. The Pioneers earned their first weekend sweep over the Fighting Hawks (4-5-2, 1-2-1 NCHC) at Ralph Engelstad Arena since Jan. 29-30, 2010.

Sophomore Carter Mazur and freshman Jared Wright both had two goals in the contest, while junior McKade Webster and freshman Aidan Thompson also scored. Sophomore Jack Devine had a pair of assists for a multi-point performance as well, and goaltender Magnus Chrona made 21 saves.

Massimo Rizzo, Carter King, Casey Dornbach and Justin Lee also had assists in the outing for Denver.

The Fighting Hawks began the scoring just seven second into the contest as Judd Caulfield tallied off the opening faceoff, but the Pios held a 14-3 advantage in shots in the frame.

Denver thought they scored at 1:12 of the second period on a Kyle Mayhew one-timer from the right point, but North Dakota challenged for goaltender interference and the on-ice officials agreed. It didn't take long for the Pioneers to find twine again as Mazur scored his first of two at 3:41 and Webster deflected Lee's slap shot  at 7:40 of the stanza.

North Dakota briefly tied the outing at 2-2 on a power-play marker from Cooper Moore at 14:32 but Denver held the lead entering the third as the rookie Thompson tallied for the second straight night with 1:37 before the intermission.

Wright added two marks in the third period, and Mazur scored again to seal DU's victory.

The Pioneers outshot the Fighting Hawks 33-24 overall and held a 25-12 advantage after two periods.

Denver finished 2-for-3 on the power play and went 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
