Corbett Has Career Day In Win Over Bulldogs

Pioneers win streak reaches three for first time since 2018

NEW ORLEANS, LA --Tyree Corbett scored 30 points to help lead the Denver men's basketball team over the Citadel Bulldogs 74-71 at Kiefer Lakefront Arena Thursday.

The Pioneers (5-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Corbett, who recorded a double-double with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Tevin Smith added 10 points and Tommy Bruner added nine points and six assists.

Touko Tainamo pulled down six offensive rebounds to pace the Denver offense which grabbed 14 boards and turned them into 16 second chance points.

How It Happened

After playing to a 4-4 tie, Denver went on a 5-0 run with 16:37 left in the first half to take a 9-4 lead. The Pioneers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 34-33 advantage. Denver took advantage of nine offensive rebounds to score 11 second chance points out of 34 total in the period

Citadel proceeded to take a 66-65 lead before Denver went on a 6-0 run to seize a 71-66 lead with 42 seconds to go in the contest. The Bulldogs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Pioneers still held on for the 74-71 win. Denver took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 40 points in the lane.

Game Notes

» Tyree Corbett notched an impressive double-double for the Pioneers with 30 points and 12 rebounds, his third of the season.
» Corbett is first Pioneer to post back-to-back double-doubles since Royce O'Neale in 2012. 
» Corbett became the first Pioneer to record at least 30 points and 10 rebounds in a game since Ade Murkey had 42 and 11 at South Dakota State on Feb. 14, 2020. 
» Tommy Bruner had a season-most six assists, his third game with at least 5. 
» Denver had a 40-29 edge on the boards in the win.
» Denver cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 14 offensive boards in the game.
» Denver got its first three-game winning streak since March of 2018. 
» Denver again outshoots its opponent at the line, 31-17. 
» Denver has led at halftime of every contest this year.
