Pioneers now 7-1; best start in D-I era through eight games

HOUSTON, TX --Tommy Bruner hit a dagger 3-pointer with 1:09 left in the fourth quarter to put Denver ahead 88-81, and the Pioneers earned a 93-83 victory against the Houston Christian Huskies on the road Thursday.

The Pioneers (7-1) had five players score in double figures, led by Tyree Corbett, who notched a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Bruner added 20 points and eight assists and Touko Tainamo chipped in as well with 18 points.

Denver shared the ball well in Thursday's game, racking up 15 assists on 35 made field goals. Bruner's eight assists paced the Pioneers and Ben Bowen also helped out with three assists of his own.

Denver forced 14 Houston Christian turnovers. The Pioneers turned those takeaways into 24 points on the offensive end of the floor. Justin Mullins' four steals led the way for Denver.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 4-2 advantage, Denver went on a 6-0 run with 18:19 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Tainamo, to increase its lead to 10-2. The Pioneers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 49-44 advantage. Denver did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 30 of its 49 points close to the basket.

The Huskies proceeded to tie things up at 81-81 before Denver went on a 10-0 run to seize a 91-81 lead with 19 seconds to go in the contest. The Pioneers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 93-83 win. Denver took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 44 points in the lane.
