DENVER – The National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced on Tuesday that junior
Magnus Chrona of the University of Denver hockey team has been named Goaltender of the Month for January.
Chrona went 6-0-1 during the month, posting a 1.67 goals-against average, .920 save percentage and three shutouts in seven starts.
He recorded three consecutive shutouts from Jan. 21-28, becoming just the third goalie in DU history to accomplish the feat and the first to do so in three consecutive team games. His shutout streak of 198:10 was the longest in the NCHC this season and the third-longest in school history (
Marc Cheverie, 223:51, Oct. 9-30, 2009;
Peter Mannino, 208:42, Feb. 26-March 27, 2005). In NCHC history, the shutout streak ranked as the fifth longest.
The Stockholm, Sweden, native picked up his second shutout of the season by making 31 saves in a 4-0 win versus Omaha on Jan. 16; it was the most stops he has made in a clean sheet in his career. Chrona followed that performance with a weekend shutout sweep of Colorado College, making 19 saves on Jan. 21 and 16 saves on Jan. 22.
Chrona has started each of the last 18 games for the Pioneers and has registered a 14-1-1 record in the last 16 contests. He is currently on an eight-game unbeaten streak (7-0-1), a season high and tied for the longest of his career (7-0-1, Oct. 5-Nov. 8, 2019). Overall, the keeper has posted a 17-4-1 record, 2.11 goals-against average, .911 save percentage and four shutouts in 22 games in 2021-22. His four shutouts are a new personal best for a single campaign and his seven in his career now rank tied for seventh in program history.
This is Chrona's second NCHC Goaltender of the Month award, as he also earned the honor as a freshman in the first month of his career in October 2019. It is just the fourth time that a DU netminder has earned a monthly award from the conference, as
Filip Larsson also earned top goalie honors for November 2018 while
Tanner Jaillet was named Player of the Month in January 2017.
Chrona has been named Goaltender of the Week on three occasions this season, earning the award on Dec. 6, Jan. 17 and Jan. 24.
