STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 15 University of Denver women's lacrosse team defeated No. 14 Stanford 8-6 on Friday night at Cagan Stadium.
Inside the Box Score:
The Pioneers trailed 5-2 with 4:01 to play in the second quarter before ending the game on a 6-1 run in the final 34 minutes to pull out the two-goal victory.
Bea Behrins led the Pioneers with five points on four goals and an assist.
Lauren Black added a pair of markers as well to round out the Pioneers' multi-point getters.
Denver's defense was the story in the run, holding the Cardinal to just three shots across the entirety of the second half.
In her second win in as many starts,
Emelia Bohi made five saves and allowed five even-strength goals.
Abby Jenkins hauled in four draw controls, while
Sam Thacker pulled in three.
First Quarter:
Stanford raced out to a 3-1 lead in the opening 15 minutes of play in its home opener. The Cardinal found the back of the net on its first possession before Behrins answered with a tally on the other end to tie things up with 11:26 left in the period.
The Cardinal scored at 8:18 and 4:03 of the quarter to close the scoring in the first, with Cardinal goalkeeper Kara Rahaim holding Denver scoreless in the final 11:26 with four saves. In the other cage, Pios goalie Bohi stopped three Cardinal shots on goal.
Second Quarter:
Kayla DeRose got the first goal of the quarter, finishing her first goal of the season on the crease off a feed from
Alex Marino.
Back-to-back goals from the Cardinal added to the Stanford lead, making it 5-2 with 4 minutes to go in the first half.
Black finally solved Rahaim from the free-position shot, scoring Denver's first goal from the arc on its fifth shot from there in the half. Black's goal, which was her fourth of the campaign, took Denver into the locker room down by only two.
Third Quarter:
Behrins scored back-to-back goals to complete her second hat trick in as many games in 2022. Nearly five minutes later, Behrins fed a cutting Black just outside the crease for her fifth goal of the season to stretch Denver's run to 4-0 and give the Pioneers their first lead of the night at 6-5 heading into the fourth quarter.
Denver's defense held Stanford to just one shot in the third quarter, an attempt that forced Bohi's fifth save of the night.
Fourth Quarter:
Charlotte Boote stayed very patient on a free-position attempt from a tight angle before finishing her second of the season to open the fourth-quarter scoring.
Behrins netted a fourth-goal for the second-straight game to make it 8-5 Pioneers, pushing their run to 6-0, a stretch that began with 2:16 remaining in the second quarter.
Denver's defense had held Stanford to just two shots in the first 25 minutes of the second half, holding the Cardinal without a goal until Caitlin Chicoski found the back of the net on a free-position shot to give Stanford its first goal since in 29:56 and cut the Pioneers lead to two.
Notes:
- Bea Behrins hat trick was her second of the season and the 28th of her career.
- Denver's win is its sixth-straight in the series, including its third-straight in Stanford, California.
- The Pioneers victory is their 15th-straight regular season win, having not lost in the regular season since Feb. 28, 2021--the 2021 season opener.
