Denver Skiing Finishes Third at NCAA Championships

Competition concluded with Nordic freestyle races
MIDWAY, Utah – The University of Denver ski team finished third overall as the 2022 NCAA Championships wrapped up on Saturday with the women's 15-kilometer and men's 20K freestyle races at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center.
The Pioneers earned 436.5 total points after the eight events and finished ahead of fourth-place Colorado, which picked up 435 points. Host Utah won its third straight skiing championship with 578 points, while Vermont placed second with 511.5.
Junior Bernhard Flaschberger led DU in the men's 20K mass start by finishing in fourth place, garnering first-team All-American honors after being named to the second-team following a 10th-place result in the men's 10K classic on Thursday.
Flaschberger was part of the lead group heading to the finish but finished 14 seconds off the lead following a strong kick by winner Ben Ogden of Vermont (43:00.50). In a sprint for third, the Pioneer crossed the line just behind Alaska Anchorage's JC Schoonmaker, who beat him by nine-hundredths of a second.
Utah's Sam Hendry was also part of the lead group and came in second, and Middlebury's Peter Wolter was one second behind Flaschberger in fifth.
Freshman Andreas Kirkeng also scored in 11th place, as the Pioneer men picked up 51 points in the team event. Senior Ole Marius Kirkeng finished 37th.
Sophomore Hanna Ray led Denver in the women's 15K, finishing in a time of 40:27.2 and in 19th overall. Vera Norli also scored in 30th and fellow junior Emma Larsson was close behind in 33rd.
Utah finished first and second on the podium in the women's event, with Sophia Laukli picking up her first collegiate championship and Novie McCabe finishing right behind her. Jasmine Lyons of New Hampshire was third.
Denver ended up having nine All-Americans, with six being named to the First Team, tied for the second-most in the country with Vermont.
