Bobby Brink Named Hobey Baker Award Hat Trick Finalist

Denver hockey forward is up for college hockey's top honor

DENVER – University of Denver hockey forward Bobby Brink has been named one of three Hobey Baker Hat Trick Finalists for the 2022 award, the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation announced on Thursday.

The Hobey Baker Award annually recognizes college hockey's most outstanding player that exemplifies character, sportsmanship, academic achieve and excellence on the ice.  The 42nd annual award will be announced on Friday, April 8 during the Frozen Four festivities in Boston.  The ceremony will be broadcasted live on NHL Network at 4 p.m. MT.

Brink, 20, is looking to become the third Denver player to win the award, joining Matt Carle in 2006 and Will Butcher in 2017.  He is the first Pioneer to be Hobey Baker Hat Trick finalist since Henrik Borgstrom in 2018.

The junior from Minnetonka, Minnesota, is joined in the "hat trick" with Minnesota State senior goaltender Dryden McKay and Minnesota junior forward Ben Meyers.  The three finalists were selected from the initial list of Top Ten candidates by the 30-member Selection Committee and an additional round of online fan balloting to determine this year's Hobey Baker Award winner.

Brink leads the nation with a career-high 56 points and 42 assists, the most by a Pioneer since Gabe Gauthier had 57 points in 2004-05 and Matt Carle had 42 assists in his Hobey Baker-winning campaign in 2005-06.  He is one of two players in the nation to reach the 50-point threshold and was the first to achieve the feat with an assist on Feb. 26 at Omaha.

The right wing has registered 47 points (11g/36a) in the last 31 games and is also first in the country with a 1.44 points-per-game average.  He gained 35 (9g/26a) of his 56 points during conference play, the most in the NCHC and was later named both the Player and Forward of the Year by the conference.

Brink was recognized as the NCHC and the Hockey Commissioners' Association's National Player of the Month for February after totaling 15 points (5g/10a) in eight games.  Brink recorded a career-long 14-game point streak (7g/21a) from Dec. 31-Feb. 19, the longest by a Denver player since Danton Heinen had an 18-game run from Jan. 22-March 27, 2017 (14g/20a).  He picked up at least one assist in each of the first 13 games of the streak, also a personal best.

Selected in the second round (34th overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers, Brink has recorded 91 points (27g/64a) and owns a 1.11 points-per-game average in 82 career games.

Majoring in business administration with an emphasis in business analytics, Brink has been named to the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and has been recognized as an NCHC Distinguished-Scholar Athlete in each of his three years at DU.  To be eligible for the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete award, a player must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better.

UP NEXT: The Pioneers will face fellow No. 1-seed Michigan in the national semifinals of the Frozen Four at 3 p.m. MT on Thursday, April 7 in Boston.
