WASHINGTON – The No. 9 Denver Pioneers women's lacrosse team held off a rally by the Georgetown Hoyas on Friday afternoon at Copper Field to win 14-12 and stay unbeaten in conference play.
Denver improved to 13-1 on the season and 3-0 in the Big East Conference as the squad stretched its winning streak to a season-long seven games.
Junior
Julia Gilbert and graduate student
Bea Behrins both had five goals apiece for the Pioneers, with Gilbert scoring a key insurance marker with 1:35 remaining in the fourth quarter. The goal gave DU the cushion that it needed against a Georgetown team that tallied 10 of its 12 goals in the second half and was on a 5-2 run in the fourth quarter.
Gilbert added an assist for a six-point contest and freshman
Lauren Black also had a multi-point outing with two goals and an assist. Freshmen
Caroline Colimore and
Raegan Wilson also scored for the Pioneers.
DU freshman goalkeeper
Emelia Bohi played most of the game and made five saves. Junior
Victoria Macres played part of the fourth quarter.
Georgetown was led by a five-point performance from Ali Diamond (two goals and three assists) and Erin Bakes, who registered three goals and an assist—two of her markers came on free position shots. Annabelle Albert and Tatum Geist also recorded two-goal games for the Hoyas, who received eight saves from goalkeeper Emily Gaven.
The Pioneers scored the game's first five goals before Diamond and Albert tallied back-to-back marker in the second quarter to cut Georgetown's deficit to 5-2. However, DU stretched its lead once again to five as Behrins completed the hat trick with two markers in a matter of 52 seconds in the final two minutes of play.
In the third quarter, Behrins, Gilbert and Wilson all tallied to keep the Pios well ahead, but the Hoyas started to find its offensive groove in the frame, including tallying twice in the last 1:44 of the stanza.
Georgetown made it a one-goal game on three occasions in the fourth quarter (11-10, 12-11, 13-12) but never got the equalizer, as Gilbert scored twice and Black also found twine in the last 7:34 of play for DU. Black's goal with 4:14 left ended up as the game-winner, as the Pioneers played shutdown defense for most of the final minutes of regulation.
Denver outshot Georgetown 33-23 overall and had a 22-17 edge in shots on goal. DU picked up 14-of-27 groundballs, while GU gained 15-of-29 draw controls in the contest.
UP NEXT: The No. 9 Pioneers return to the east coast next weekend as they face Villanova on Saturday, April 23 before closing the regular season with back-to-back home games against in-state rival Colorado on April 27 and Marquette on senior day on April 30.
