Katie Hensien Named National Women's Alpine Skier of the Year

Senior earned six podiums and won the 2022 Women's Slalom NCAA National Championship
DENVER – University of Denver skiing's Katie Hensien has been named the 2022 National Women's Alpine Skier of the Year by the United State Collegiate Ski Coaches Association.

Hensien finished seven of the eight collegiate races that she competed in during the 2022 season, placing in the top five in each of the events and coming in first or second in six of them.

The senior completed her collegiate career by winning the NCAA National Championship in women's slalom on March 11, one day after placing second in giant slalom at this year's nationals in Park City, Utah. She became the 96th skier in Denver history to win an individual national championship and the second in as many years to do it in women's slalom after Amelia Smart also won the event in 2021.

Born in Redmond, Washington, but grew up in Park City, Utah, Hensien recorded six of her eight career podiums this season. She picked up her first career collegiate victory in women's giant slalom at the RMISA Invitational at Park City on Jan. 23 and followed it up with another victory in the GS the following day at the Utah Invitational.

Prior to the national championships, Hensien also came in second place in slalom at the RMISA Invitational at Bridger Bowl, Montana, on Jan. 20 and at the Utah Invitational on Jan. 25. She opened the collegiate campaign with a fifth-place result in GS at the Montana State Invitational on Jan. 18.

Hensien is a member of the U.S. Alpine Ski Team and placed 26th in women's slalom in her Olympic debut at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, China, on Feb. 9. She raced in seven FIS Alpine World Cup events and six Europa Cup races in 2021-22, and she closed the international ski season by placing second in slalom and fourth in giant slalom at the U.S. National Championships on March 29-31 in Sugarloaf Resort, Maine.

The 22-year-old is a 2022 First-Team All-American and was named to the All-RMISA First Team this year as well. She also earned Women's Alpine Skier of the Meet honors this season for her performance at the RMISA Invitational.
