DENVER – The University of Denver ski team had seven athletes earn a total of nine All-American honors this season, with senior
Katie Hensien and junior
Bernhard Flaschberger both picking up multiple accolades.
Hensien was named a first-team All-American in both women's alpine slalom and women's alpine giant slalom, while Flaschberger was named to the first team in men's Nordic freestyle and the second team in men's Nordic classic.
Senior
Simon Fournier (men's alpine slalom), freshman
Andreas Kirkeng (men's Nordic classic) and senior
Tobias Kogler (men's alpine giant slalom) were also named First-Team All-Americans, while sophomore
Hanna Ray (women's Nordic classic) and junior
Galena Wardle (women's alpine giant slalom) grabbed second-team nods.
The Pioneers' nine All-Americans were the fourth-most in the country, while their six first-team honorees were the second-highest total behind only Utah. All-Americans are determined based on the skiers' finish at the NCAA National Championships (finishers 1-5 made the first team; finishers 6-10 made second team), which were held on March 9-12 in Park City and Midway, Utah.
Hensien became a two-time first-team All-American after winning an individual national championship in women's slalom and placing second in giant slalom. DU grabbed three other All-American nominations on the alpine side as Kogler came in fourth in men's GS, Fournier placing fourth in men's slalom and Wardle finishing seventh in women's giant slalom.
In the Nordic competition, Flaschberger was just off the podium in fourth place in the men's 20-kilometer freestyle and came in 10th in the 10K classic. Kirkeng also picked up first-team honors after placing on the podium in second in the men's classic, and Ray was a second-teamer following her ninth-place result in the 5K classic.
As a team, the Pioneers finished third at the 2022 NCAA National Championships in March.
