DENVER – The No. 10 University of Denver women's lacrosse team's second-half rally fell short on Wednesday night as the Pioneers lost 12-10 to the Colorado Buffaloes at a packed Peter Barton Stadium.
Denver nearly erased a five-goal deficit late in the third quarter and made it a one-score game with 8:38 remaining in regulation on
Bea Behrins' second tally of the night. However, the Pios never found the equalizer and Charlie Rudy scored her fifth of the game later on in the frame as an insurance marker for CU
Behrins finished with a team-high four points as she also added a pair of assists, while
Lauren Black recorded her seventh hat trick of her freshman campaign with a trio of goals.
Ellie Curry recorded two markers of her own, while
Charlotte Boote,
Kailee Lammers and
Raegan Wilson also found the back of the cage.
Freshman goalkeeper
Emelia Bohi made four of her seven saves in the second half to give DU a chance for a comeback.
The teams traded goals for most of the first quarter, with the Buffs taking a 4-3 lead following the opening 15 minutes.
Black tied the game at four-all with her hat-trick marker 49 seconds into the second period, but Colorado went on a 3-0 run to close the half and tallied seven of the next nine to take an 11-6 lead late in the third quarter.
DU began a 4-0 run as Boote scored with 1:21 left in the third stanza, and Curry and Wilson each tallied in the first three minutes of the fourth to get the Pioneers back in the contest.
Rudy led Colorado with a game-high seven points as she also had two assists with her five goals, and Sadie Grozier also scored multiple times with two tallies while also adding two helpers. Buffaloes goalkeeper Grace Donnelly made 13 saves as DU outshot CU 36-25 overall and had a 23-19 edge in shots on goal.
UP NEXT: Denver wraps up the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT as it hosts Marquette on senior day at Peter Barton Stadium. Having already secured at least a share of the Big East regular-season championship, a win by the Pioneers will give them the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament, which will be held at DU on May 5-7.
