Summers Clinches 4-3 Win for [66] Denver Over Drake

Pioneer graduate student Matt Summers and Nico Herrero Cuesta pulled in double wins on Friday afternoon

DES MOINES, Iowa – The [66] University of Denver men's tennis team (12-6, 3-0) won the all-important doubles point and took three of the six singles matches in a battle of the unbeatens in the Summit League, a 4-3 win for the Pioneers over Drake (9-10, 3-1) on Friday afternoon at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
 
Doubles:
Denver won the doubles point after taking wins on the No. 1 court and a tight victory on court three.
 
James Davis and Matt Summers won 6-3 on the top court to improve to 10-3 on the year, winners of their last five as a pair. On court three, Peter Sallay and Nicolas Herrero Cuesta combined together for the first time this season, taking their match on court three by a count of 7-5.
 
Singles:
Herrero Cuesta got over the line first to take a 2-0 lead in the match, a straight-set victory on court two by a count of 6-4, 6-4. The Denver sophomore improved to 13-3 after his fifth-straight victory.
 
Charlie Miller made it 3-0 Pios on court six with a 6-2, 6-4 win of his own. Miller is 8-3 on the season in singles play, having won each of his last three.
 
Drake got wins on courts five, four and one to come all the way back and level the match at 3-3, turning all eyes onto court three for the deciding point.
 
Summers lost a tiebreaker 8-6 in the opening set, but in the second set broke his opponent at 6-5 in the third to even the match up at a set all. After falling a break behind at 2-0 in the third, Summers roared back to win the next six games to take the match and clinch the Pioneers their third-straight Summit League win. Summers' seventh-straight singles victory sent him to 14-4 on the season.
 
UP NEXT: Denver will stay on the road on Sunday when the Pioneers head to Omaha. First serve is set for 11 a.m. MT.
