DENVER – The Denver Pioneers women's lacrosse team will play the University of Vermont in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament on Friday at 2 p.m. MT in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, as the matchup was announced on Sunday night during the national selection show.
Denver is coming off its second-consecutive Big East Tournament Championship after defeating Georgetown 16-15 in overtime on Saturday at Peter Barton Stadium. The Pioneers have also won three-straight regular-season Big East titles, winning in 2019, 2021 and 2022.
The Pios will play the Catamounts on the Boston College campus, as the Eagles were announced as the host school of this regional. BC, which is a top three-seeded team in the tournament and has a first-round bye, will face the winner between DU and UVM on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT.
Denver owns a 17-2 record this season, going 5-0 during Big East Conference play. The Pioneers, who were listed at No. 12 in both national polls last week, were ranked as high as No. 8 at one point this year—their highest national ranking in program history.
The Pioneers are 3-1 all-time against Vermont, including winning each of the last two matchups. The teams last met on March 12, 2017 in Denver, with the DU picking up a 14-4 win.
Denver is 0-4 versus Boston College, which includes a 9-5 loss at home this season on March 9 when the Eagles were ranked as No. 1 team in the nation. That game was called official after three quarters due to the extremely cold temperatures on the field (wind chill in single digits).
The winner of this regional will advance to the national quarterfinals on May 19, which will also be held at a campus site.
