DENVER – The University of Denver hockey program announced today its full 2022-23 regular season schedule, with the Pioneers opening their 36-game campaign at home with the Ice Breaker Tournament against non-conference foes Notre Dame and Maine.
The 2022 NCAA National Champions, Denver is co-hosting next season's Ice Breaker Tournament with the U.S. Air Force Academy and faces the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the season opener on Friday, Oct. 7 at Magness Arena. DU takes on the Maine Black Bears the following night on Saturday, Oct. 8 to close out the annual non-conference event that celebrates the start of the college hockey season.
Overall, the Pioneers will play 22 home games and 14 away contests during the regular season, with non-conference series also scheduled against Massachusetts, Providence, Arizona State, Lindenwood and Alaska Fairbanks.
DU hits the road for the first time in the season the week after the Ice Breaker as it takes on UMass on Oct. 14-15 in the team's only road non-conference matchup of the year and a meeting of the last two NCAA National Champions. It will be the Pios' first trip to Amherst since Dec. 17, 2013, and the teams' first series against one another since Denver swept the Minutemen at Magness Arena with 4-2 and 4-3 wins on Jan. 3-4, 2020.
After hosting Providence College on Oct. 21-22, the Pioneers begin National Collegiate Hockey Conference play in Oxford, Ohio, against Miami University on Oct. 28-29. It will be the start of eight-straight games in-conference, as the Pioneers will host St. Cloud State on Nov. 4-5, play at North Dakota on Nov. 11-12 and then face Omaha at Magness Arena on Nov. 25-26.
Denver will play five of their conference's opponents four times during the year, with the Pios taking on Colorado College, Miami, Minnesota Duluth, North Dakota and St. Cloud State twice at home and twice on the road. Omaha will be the only team that the Denver won't visit this year, while Western Michigan will be the lone NCHC squad that won't travel to Denver as the Pioneers and Broncos face off in their only series on Feb. 24-25 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
North Dakota will make its trip to Denver on Feb. 10-11, marking UND's first games at DU since Jan. 17-18, 2021 and the first matchup at Magness Arena with fans in attendance since Nov. 15-16, 2019.
The Gold Pan rivalry with Colorado College will be played across three weekends this season, with the Pioneers and Tigers meeting on Friday, Jan. 27 in Denver before wrapping up the first half of the series on Saturday, Feb. 4 in Colorado Springs. The game at DU was originally announced by the NCHC for Saturday, Jan. 28, but it has since been changed to Jan. 27.
The Pioneers and Tigers close the regular season against one another with a home-and-home set on March 3-4. DU, which has won seven-straight games in one of college hockey's most-played rivalries, will play their final home game on March 3 versus CC before closing the main campaign the next night at Ed Robson Arena.
Denver won't have two consecutive weekends on the road during the regular season, while its longest homestand is six games from Dec. 16-Jan. 14—albeit with a two-week bye in the middle of that stretch for the holiday break. The Pioneers will play home games on consecutive weekends three times, beginning with contests versus Omaha on Nov. 25-26 and Arizona State on Dec. 2-3.
DU will face one of the newest members of the division-I NCAA ranks on Dec. 16-17 as it hosts Lindenwood University on Dec. 16-17 before going on its holiday break. The Pioneers then open the New Year with home outings versus Alaska Fairbanks on Jan. 6-7 and Miami on Jan. 13-14.
Minnesota Duluth, the 2022 NCHC Frozen Faceoff champions and the opponent that the Pioneers played in last year's NCAA West Regional Final, makes its trip to Denver on Feb. 17-18 to wrap up DU's four-game homestand that began the previous week against North Dakota.
The best-of-three NCHC Quarterfinal series is slated for March 10-12 at campus sites before the conference tournament concludes with the Frozen Faceoff at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, on March 17-18.
NCAA Regional sites for the 2023 national tournament are Fargo, North Dakota; Allentown, Pennsylvania; Bridgeport, Connecticut; and Manchester, New Hampshire. This year's NCAA Frozen Four will be held at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, on April 6-8.
The Pioneers will also host an exhibition game prior to the start of the season, as they take on the University of Nevada Las Vegas at Magness Arena on Saturday, Oct. 1.
Denver hockey season tickets are on sale now, including Friday or Saturday half-season plans.
