DENVER – University of Denver Skiing's
Katie Hensien will be recognized by the Colorado Snowsports Hall of Fame as the female Collegiate Athlete of the Year during the 2022 ceremony on Aug. 21 in Vail, Colorado.
Hensien will be honored as part of a celebration that welcomes the 2022 hall of fame class as well as recognizing the other annual award recipients. The other award honorees are Mikaela Shiffrin as Competitor of the Year, Thomas Walsh as Adaptive Athlete of the Year, Chan and Melitta Bergen for their Lifetime Achievement and The National Brotherhood of Skiers as winners of the Top of the Hill Award. In addition, Filip Forejtek of the University of Colorado is also be recognized as the male Collegiate Athlete of the Year.
The 2022 Colorado Snowsports Hall of Fame inductees are John Dakin, Ron LeMaster, Peter Rietz, Jeannie Thoren, and Chester R. "Chet" Upham, Jr.
Hensien won the NCAA Championship in women's slalom, placed second at nationals in giant slalom and was chosen as the National Women's Alpine Skier of the Year by the U.S. Collegiate Ski Coaches Association. She reached the podium in six-of-eight races and was in the top five in all seven events she finished.
The 2022 senior picked up three overall wins during the collegiate season, with her also posting victories in the GS at the RMISA Invitational and Utah Invitational in Park City, Utah, on Jan. 23-24. She combined those wins with a pair of second-place finishes in slalom at both meets.
A member of Team USA for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Hensien became the first DU student to represent the United States in alpine skiing since Eric Poulsen at the 1972 Olympics in Sapporo and the first woman to do so since Gladys Werner in the 1956 Olympics in Cortina. Hensien finished her Olympic debut in 26th in women's slalom.
The 45th annual Colorado Snowsports Hall of Fame Celebration will take place from 3:30-7 p.m. MT on Sunday, Aug. 21 at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail, Colorado. Tickets begin at $50 per person for lawn seating and admission is free on the lawn for ages 18 and under.
