Denver Tops San Diego 1-0 in Season Opener

Goodrich's first career goal leads Denver in shutout victory

DENVER -- Denver opened its 2022 campaign with a shutout win over San Diego at home, topping the Toreros 1-0.

The game's only goal came from sophomore Jadyn Goodrich in the 35th minute. It was the first goal of her career.

COACH'S NOTES:

From head coach Jeff Hooker: "I was really happy with the energy we came out with, and we kind of had a bounce in our step. A lot of times in our home opener, you start that way and all of the emotion kills you, but we kept plugging forward. We created a lot of half chances, but we were struggling with the final pass. But once it all got put together, what a great goal that Jadyn, Sami (Feller) and Blythe (Sales) combined for. Overall I was really impressed coming out with not only a shutout but a victory."

SIGNIFICANT STATS:

  • Denver outshot San Diego 12-3, including 8-0 on net.
  • DU took the only five corner kicks of the night.
  • Goodrich's goal was assisted by graduate student Sami Feller and sophomore Blythe Sales.
  • Six Pioneers played the full 90 minutes.
  • Denver held its opponent without a shot on goal for the 28th time in its Division I history (last: April 17, 2021, at Omaha)

FIRST HALF:

After shots on goal from graduate student Camryn MacMillan, Goodrich, Feller and junior McKenna Dannenhauer, Goodrich finally converted for the first and only goal of the game in the 35th minute off feeds from Feller and Sales -- the first assist of the sophomore's career. Feller closed out the half with her third shot on target before heading into the locker room.

SECOND HALF:

DU opened the second half with two shots from junior Vanessa Murray and Feller before sophomore Kiera Flanagan landed DU's only shot on goal of the half, coming in the 85th minute.

Freshman Lily O'Grady entered the game to mark the first minutes of her collegiate career.

Graduate student Devan McSwain secured the 1-0 victory with a blocked shot in the final minute of the game, helping redshirt senior Nerea Arrazola earn the 21st shutout of her career.

WHAT'S NEXT:

DU continues its opening weekend when it hosts Weber State on Sunday, August 22, at 12 p.m.
