Late Utah Goal Hands Denver 1-2 Road Loss on Thursday Night

MacMillan scores first goal, leads Denver with four shots in first away match

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Denver women's soccer team dropped its first match of the 2022 season after a 1-2 loss at Utah on Thursday night.

COACH'S NOTES:
From head coach Jeff Hooker: "I'm happy with a lot of things that we did. We felt that they'd have most of the possession, and we were OK with that. We knew it was up to us to defend well. We showed a lot of hustle and had the scrapy goal from Cam; and we felt good after the first half.

"In the second half, I still felt that we had opportunities and helped them a little on their first goal, but we didn't let that get to us. For our first road match, I was glad to be in the game, and we'll learn from it."

SIGNIFICANT STATS:

  • Graduate student Camryn MacMillan had the game's opening goal, her first since returning from a February 2021 injury.
  • Graduate student Devan McSwain had the assist on MacMillan's goal, marking her first point of 2022 season.
  • MacMillan's game-leading four shots matched her career high (October 10, 2019).
  • Graduate student Sami Feller extended her streak of matches with at least one shot on goal, now at five dating back to November 4, 2021.
  • For the second match in a row, redshirt senior Nerea Arrazola had three saves.

FIRST HALF:
Denver withstood pressure from Utah through the first 18 minutes of play, and Arrazola kept the score at 0-0 with two saves.

In the 24th minute, MacMillan gave Denver a 1-0 lead after settling the ball off a set piece after McSwain delivered it inside the box.

SECOND HALF:
Utah tied the game up at 1-1 in the 58th minute with a goal from Madeline Vergura, but Denver responded with some of its strongest offensive pressure of the match including three straight shots from DU.

Utah's Brady bounced one off the right goal post and just out of Arrazola's reach for the late game-winning goal. MacMillan tried to tie things up in the 89th minute but was unable to convert after her shot was blocked.

WHAT'S NEXT:
DU (2-1-0) returns home for its second straight Power-5 match-up when it hosts Arizona State (1-0-1) on Sunday, August 28, at 12 p.m. The match will be televised live on Altitude.
