DU Earns 1-1 Draw Against Arizona State on Sunday

MacMillan opens scoring for Denver in the first half for the second straight match

DENVER – The University of Denver women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Arizona State on Sunday, moving DU to 2-1-1 on the season.

COACH'S NOTES:
From head coach Jeff Hooker: "I really felt like this was a decent character tie. You like to win at home, but they're a really good opponent with good athletes and a good coach, and they played well against us.

"I didn't know how the team would come out of the (weather) break, and I thought we came out super well. I thought we created a lot right at the beginning, and I'm most proud of not giving up a goal, defending hard and blocking shots."

SIGNIFICANT STATS:

  • Graduate student Camryn MacMillan scored for the second time in as many matches with both of her goals coming in the 24th minute. She is now the only Pioneer to have multiple goals on the season.
  • Senior Kaitlyn Glover and junior Vanessa Murray had the helpers on MacMillan's goal, marking their first assists of the season.
  • Sunday marked the first time that Murray played the full 90 minutes this year.
  • Notching her first shot on target of the season was junior Jordan Crockett, who did so in the 59th minute.
  • Denver last played to a draw against a Pac-12 opponent on September 6, 2002, a 1-1 tie also against Arizona State through two overtime periods in a neutral-site match-up in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

FIRST HALF:
ASU got on the scoreboard first with an eighth-minute goal from Nicole Douglas. After generating three consecutive corner kicks and holding pressure in the offensive zone, MacMillan finally converted, juggling around the keeper and burying it to tie up the match at 1-1.

SECOND HALF:
Just moments before the second-half kickoff, the match was delayed about an hour due to weather.

After having the final shot of the first half for either team, sophomore Jadyn Goodrich had Denver's first shot attempt of the second half early in the 56th minute. DU had the next two shots of the match, starting with Murray's in the 58th minute and Crockett's on-target shot in the 59th minute.

DU withstood four straight shots from Arizona State and eventually played out the remainder of the match to a 1-1 draw.

WHAT'S NEXT:
DU (2-1-1) begins a five-match road trip by visiting Eastern Washington (0-2-2) on Thursday, September 1. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. MT.
