DU Women’s Soccer Comes Up Short Against Eastern Washington

Denver leads 12-8 in shots but 82nd-minute EWU goal hands DU a 0-1 loss on Thursday night

CHENEY, Washington – The University of Denver women's soccer team led in time of possession and shots taken on Thursday night at Eastern Washington but fell 0-1 after an 82nd-minute goal for the Eagles.

COACH'S NOTES:
From head coach Jeff Hooker: "I thought that we had really good control of the game. The biggest frustration was that the five best chances that we had were semi one-on-ones with the goalkeeper, and we didn't hit the goal on any of them. We didn't reward ourselves for all of the good play leading up to that. If one of those goes in for us, obviously it's a totally different game. This one stings because you feel your team played well and put out a good effort; we just didn't reward ourselves with a goal."

SIGNIFICANT STATS:
  • Seven different Pioneers accounted for DU's seven shots in the first half including the first of the season for both senior Hannah Gallegos and junior Megan Prazich.
  • Sophomore Ella Frost's five shots were the most for either team and became a new career best.
  • Denver's 12 shots equal its most of the season, also achieved in the season opener against San Diego.
  • DU narrowly missed goals with shots off the cross bar in the 17th and 50th minutes.
  • Sophomore Delaney McGowan made her season debut, playing 11 minutes in the first half and 12 minutes in the second half.
FIRST HALF:
Denver got the offensive pressure on early with a shot from junior Vanessa Murray just 17 seconds into the match, sending the ball over the net. Sophomore Jadyn Goodrich nearly connected in the 17th minute but hit the cross bar.

Graduate student Camryn MacMillan almost had her third goal of the season, carrying the ball into the box but hooking it just wide in the 26th minute.

In total, Denver led 7-4 in shots taken at the halfway mark, adding attempts from Gallegos in the 18th minute, Prazich in the 31st minute, sophomore Ella Frost in the 32nd minute and junior McKenna Dannenhauer in the 38th minute.

SECOND HALF:
DU picked up where it left off in the first half, owning possession early before Frost hit the crossbar in the 50th minute, Denver's second of the match.

The first corner of the match for either team went to EWU in the 53rd minute, resulting in a save from redshirt senior Nerea Arrazola. Denver's goalkeeper would finish with a total of three saves, matching her most of the season.

EWU's Pattison broke the scoreless tie in the 82nd minute, earning the game winner off an assist from teammate Rylee Franklin.

WHAT'S NEXT:
DU (2-2-1) continues its weekend on the road with a trip to Washington State on Sunday, September 4, at 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT.
