DU Women’s Soccer Falls to Washington State on Sunday

Denver outscores WSU in second half off goals from Feller, MacMillan

PULLMAN, Washington – The University of Denver women's soccer team outscored Washington State University in the second half but ultimately dropped Sunday night's match, 2-4.

Graduate students Sami Feller and Camryn MacMillan combined for two goals and five points in the final 32 minutes of play, putting Denver on the scoresheet and leading WSU 2-1 in second-half tallies.

COACH'S NOTES:
From head coach Jeff Hooker: "We played a super athletic, well-coached team. We felt we were a little overwhelmed (in the first half), which caused us to be a little fragmented in our shape.

"At halftime, we went back to basics and mostly talked about winning the second half. We played much harder and smarter and kept the ball in the parts of the field that we didn't in the first half. It was great to see the team stick together and stay positive after being down at halftime. There were a lot of good individual performances in the second half, and now we just need that for 90 minutes in our next match.

SIGNIFICANT STATS:

  • For the ninth time in her career and the third time in a non-conference match, Feller put up at least three points with her 59th-minute goal and an assist on MacMillan's 90th-minute goal.
  • MacMillan's goal at 89:16 became the 14th latest regulation goal scored in Denver history. She also owns DU's third- and 10th latest goals.
  • Four of Denver's seven shots on the night were on target compared to Washington State's eight shots on goal from 27 shots taken.
  • Denver's shot conversion rate of .286 was its best of the season so far, ahead of its .200 mark against Arizona State on August 28.
  • DU showed marked improvement in the second half including in shots taken (six versus one in the first half) and in time of possession (42% versus 12% in the first half).

FIRST HALF:
5' | Graduate student Nerea Arrazola saved the first shot she faced on the night, but Washington State's Margie Detrizio put away the rebound to put WSU up 1-0.

25' | After four blocks from Denver's defense through the first 24 minutes of play, Washington State's Sydney Studer settled a ball from Detrizio and Bridget Rieken to give WSU a 2-0 lead.

26' | Denver's first scoring chance of the match came off a feed from Feller to junior McKenna Dannenhauer and MacMillan, though MacMillan's shot was blocked out of play by WSU's defense.

44' | WSU's Marin Whieldon makes it 3-0 for the Cougars, heading the ball in off a cross from teammate Lily Boyden.

SECOND HALF:
54' | Sophomore Ella Frost had Denver's first shot of the second frame, her sixth shot in the last two matches.

59' | Feller cut the WSU lead to two (DEN 1-3 WSU) by picking up her first goal of the season with a touch from just outside the box.

83' | WSU gets its only goal of the second half off a shot from Grayson Lynch, giving the Cougars a 4-1 lead.

90' | MacMillan scores her third of the year to push the score to 2-4 after Feller took possession from the WSU goalkeeper and threaded it to MacMillan in the box.
