Pioneers fall 3-1 to Western Michigan after grabbing first set

BOULDER, CO --The Denver volleyball team won the first set, but couldn't hold on and fell in four sets (25-20, 25-27, 19-25, 21-25) to the Western Michigan Broncos Friday at CU Events Center.

The non-conference loss moved Denver to 0-1 on the season.

The Pioneers attack was paced by Hailey Green, who finished with 13 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .458, and by Jordan Lockwood, who had 11. got 10 digs from Isabella Vasquez along with eight blocks from Brianna Green and six rejections from Cadi Boyer to lead them defensively.

SET 1 | The Pioneers took control of the set-one lead at 3-2 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-20. Denver led by as many as seven points at 15-8 before closing out the set. Denver also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Western Michigan attacks in the stanza.

SET 2 | Denver then dropped set two 27-25, tying the match at a set apiece. The Pioneers fell in a close second set, losing in a stanza that was tied seven times and had three lead changes.

SET 3 | Denver fell again in the third set to make it a 2-1 deficit. The Pioneers lost a tough set 25-19. Denver trailed by as many as six points as Western Michigan grabbed the advantage for good at 16-15 in a set that was tied up three times before the Broncos took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 4 | Denver lost the fourth set and the match, falling 25-21. Western Michigan grabbed the advantage for good at 18-17 and Denver was never able to recover in a set that was tied up six times before the Broncos took over in the second half of the stanza.
