SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – University of Denver men's soccer winger Ian Smith and centerback Trevor Wright swept the first Summit League Player of the Week honors of the season, the league office announced on Monday.
In his first career game on Thursday, Smith assisted the game-winner and netted an insurance goal two minutes later in the Pioneers 3-1 win over Gonzaga on opening night. On Sunday, Smith assisted Sam Bassett's opening goal in the 24th minute and scored the game-winner in the 86th minute to give the Pioneers the road win at [RV/RV] Grand Canyon.
Smith's game-winner on Sunday was the latest Denver game-winner since Kortne Ford's winner in the 2016 NCAA Quarterfinals at Clemson (88:38).
Wright led a Denver defense that allowed only two shots on goal across the 180 minutes of action this weekend. The Pioneers defense also held Grand Canyon to only three shots and just one corner kick on Sunday night.
