DENVER – Four University of Denver women's lacrosse players were named Preseason All-Americans by USA Lacrosse Magazine on Tuesday.
Senior defender
Sam Thacker was named to the First Team, sophomore goalkeeper
Emelia Bohi was recognized on the Third Team and senior attacker
Julia Gilbert and sophomore attacker
Lauren Black were both listed as Honorable Mentions.
Overall, 61 players were honored by the publication. Denver had the most players among Big East Conference teams and was tied for the fourth-most in the country, as only Boston College (seven), Maryland (six) and North Carolina (six) had more.
Thacker enters her senior season on defense after leading all players in the nation in caused turnovers (64) and caused turnovers per game (3.05). She earned First-Team All-American accolades in 2022 after also adding 49 draw controls and 47 ground balls. The 2022 Big East Defensive Player of the Year ranks second in school history in caused turnovers (112) and is just 58 away from matching Kate Henrich's mark of 170 (2010-2013).
Bohi finished her freshman campaign with a 13-3 record in 2022 while starting 20 of the Pioneers' 21 games. She produced an 8.42 goals-against average last year—the fifth-best mark in a single season in program history. Bohi won each of her first six starts and added 32 ground balls and a .387 save percentage during the season.
Gilbert is coming off a career year in 2022 where she finished third on the team with 47 goals and 62 points and was recognized with All-Big East Second-Team honors. The attacker went 9-for-14 on free-position shots and tallied five game-winning goals last season. Gilbert enters her senior season with 101 points (81g/20a) in 45 career games.
Black is coming off a star-studded rooked campaign where she set the DU freshmen scoring record with 74 points (54g/20a), breaking the previous mark that was held by Ali Flury (72, 2007). The attacker was just the second player in program history to score 50-plus goals as a freshman (Flury, 59, 2007), and she became the first Big East freshman to reach the half-century mark in tallies since the conference's realignment in 2014. The Big East Freshman of the Year and unanimous All-Conference first-team selection led the Pios in game-winners (seven) and was second on the squad with 119 shots.
The Pioneers begin their 2023 campaign on Feb. 10 at Louisville and host Michigan in the home opener on March 1.
