DU Men’s Tennis Drops Season Opener at (RV) SMU

Denver falls 7-0 in first match of 2023; set for home opener on January 20

DALLAS – The University of Denver men's tennis team began its 2023 season at (RV) Southern Methodist, falling 7-0 on Saturday.

Doubles:
SMU captured the doubles point with wins on Courts 1 and 3, though Denver's team of graduate student Mitch Johnson and redshirt senior Anish Sriniketh were up a break on Court 2 when the first two courts completed play.

Singles:
All six of DU's singles players put up a fight in their matches including junior Nicolas Herrero Cuesta, who forced a third set on Court 1 after winning a second-set tiebreak but ultimately dropping a match tiebreak in the third.

On Court 2, sophomore Daniel Sancho Arbizu kept the first set tight before giving up a late break to fall 5-7.

On the remaining four courts, DU's student-athletes came back to force tighter second sets after dropping their first sets.
