DENVER – The University of Denver women's tennis team swept Colorado State in its first dual match of the 2023 season, winning 4-0 at Denver Tennis Park on Saturday.
Doubles:
Denver claimed the doubles point after splitting the first two matches by matching scores of 6-3 including a win on Court 3 with freshmen
Anastasia Simonov and
Louise Wikander capturing the first doubles wins of their collegiate careers.
Denver's No. 2 doubles team of fifth-year student
Taylor Melville and freshman
Claudia Martinez de Velasco clinched the doubles point for DU with a break in the final game, winning their first match point to take a 6-4 victory.
Singles:
Wikander captured the first singles point for Denver on Court 4 – her first collegiate singles win – building momentum from a late break in the first set and winning the match with a second-set bagel.
Sophomore
Andrea Burguete Beltran found herself on serve for the entire first set on Court 2 before taking the tiebreak 7-2. She then jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second set, which she would go on to win 6-1.
Melville collected the clinching point for Denver on Court 1, winning the first set 6-3 and taking an early break lead in the second set. Colorado State's Emily Dush broke back midway through the set, but Melville would break once more to serve for it at 6-5 and won at love to give Denver the team victory.
Though the remaining three courts did not finish play, Denver was leading by at least one break on Courts 5 and 6, and was on serve on Court 3.
