DENVER – The University of Denver women's tennis team finished its opening weekend of dual match play with a 6-1 win over Colorado on Sunday.
Doubles:
Denver earned a 6-1 win from senior
Britt Pursell and sophomore
Andrea Burguete Beltran on Court 1 to begin the day but ultimately lost the doubles point when CU captured one-break victories on the other two courts.
Singles:
DU's singles players swept all six courts in straight sets to secure the win over CU, starting with a dominant 6-2 6-0 win on Court 6 from freshman
Claudia Martinez de Velasco for the first singles win of her career.
Pursell used matching 6-3 sets in No. 3 singles to give Denver its second point of the day. Following closely was freshman
Louise Wikander, who scored a 6-4 6-2 win on Court 4 to put Denver within one win of the team victory.
Fifth-year student
Taylor Melville won her second straight-set match in No. 1 singles of the weekend to clinch the win for Denver, posting a bagel in the first set and then taking a 7-2 win in the second-set tiebreak.
Denver played out its remaining two matches, seeing a 6-2 6-4 win for Burguete Beltran on Court 2 and a 6-4 7-6(3) win for freshman
Caroline Driscoll on Court 5.
Up Next:
DU travels to Iowa City, Iowa, for a February 3 match at Iowa and a neutral-site match against Kansas State on February 4. The matches are set for 4 p.m. MT and 11 a.m. MT, respectively.
