DENVER – The University of Denver women's triathlon announced today that the program has named juniors
Avarie Faulkner and
Clara Normand and graduate student
Maren York as the team captains for the remainder of the 2023-24 competition season.
The three triathletes become the fourth, fifth and sixth Pioneers to hold the captain designation, joining Grace Arlandson, Amanda Ballard and Emily Pincus from 2021-22.
Faulkner is in her third season with Denver and was part of head coach
Barbara Perkins' first recruiting class. She is the only athlete to race in all 18 races over the past two-plus seasons, owning 14 career top-20 finishes, seven top-10 placements and two trips to the podium. The Bellbrook, Ohio, native began this year with a ninth-place finish at the Aquathlon Eliminator versus Colorado Mesa on Sept 2 and came in 19th in DU's most recent race at the Black Hills Collegiate Cup on Oct. 1.
Normand is in her second season with the Pioneers after transferring to Denver from Wagner College prior to the 2022 campaign. The Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec, native has placed in the top 20 in eight-of-nine events while at DU and has also earned two podiums and three top-five finishes in that time. After opening this season with a third-place result at the Aquathlon Eliminator, Normand earned her seventh career top 10 in DU's last competition two weeks ago at the Black Hills Collegiate Cup.
York is in her first year with Denver after spending four seasons on the University of Colorado's club triathlon team. The Colorado Springs, Colorado, native made her NCAA racing debut with a fifth-place finish at the Aquathlon Eliminator duel over Labor Day weekend and followed that up by coming in 25th at the Battle in the Fort Triathlon on Sept. 17 and 21st at the Black Hills Collegiate Cup on Oct. 1.
Denver heads to Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, this weekend for the Eastern Regional National Qualifier on Saturday before closing out the fall regular season on Nov. 11 at the Collegiate National Championships in Tempe, Arizona. The team will also compete in several individual races in the spring 2023 as well.
