DU Gymnastics’ Lynnzee Brown Concludes Qualification at Worlds

Denver alumna scores 47.766 in worlds debut, led by 13.500 on vault

ANTWERP, Belgium – University of Denver gymnast and alumna Lynnzee Brown continued her international elite career at the 2023 Artistic World Championships on Monday.

She became the first gymnast to represent Haiti at the world championships and scored a 47.766 in the all-around during Subdivision 7 of 10 in the qualification round.

Brown began her day on vault with her usual Yurchenko one-and-a-half, hopping slightly backward on the landing for a 13.500 (8.900 execution score).

In the second rotation, she added an 11.100 (8.100 E score) on bars using the same routine she competed through her collegiate career: Maloney to Pak Salto to Van Leeuwen and capped with her signature double layout dismount with a small hop forward.

On beam, Brown once again hit her routine to score a 11.166 (6.966 E score). As she did at the Pan American Championships to qualify for Worlds, she competed a back handspring to layout step out and added a side somi – both changes from her collegiate routine – while also debuting an upgraded gainer tuck full dismount, which she stuck.

Brown closed the competition on floor with a modified version of her 2019 NCAA national title-winning routine, earning a 12.000 (7.400 E score). She opened the routine with her usual double layout with a hop backward that she kept in bounds. For her second pass, she intended to upgrade with a back one-one-and-a-half to a front full but ended up only completing a half of the rotation. She finished with a controlled double tuck and a big smile on her face as she saluted the judges.

After the conclusion of all 10 subdivisions, Brown stood No. 82 out of 115 in the final all-around standings. She was also No. 98 on floor, No. 123 on beam and No. 125 on bars. Because she did not compete two vaults in an attempt to qualify for the vault event final, she did not receive a final ranking on that event.

Brown fell short of securing an all-around berth for the Paris Olympics during Monday's competition, but she intends to compete at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, beginning on October 21, where an additional all-around spot for the 2024 Olympic Games is available.

The Raytown, Missouri, native concluded her six-year career at the University of Denver with a program-record fourth-place finish in the all-around at the 2023 NCAA National Championships. She leaves DU as one of the most decorated gymnasts in program history, winning an NCAA national title on floor in 2019 and four Big 12 Conference championships including in the all-around in 2021. In total, she accumulated 20 WCGA All-American honors during her collegiate career and set Denver records for all-around score (39.825) and most career perfect 10.0s (five).
