No. 2 Denver Loses 4-3 at No. 10 Providence

Pioneers set to play at No. 3 Boston College on Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 2 Denver Pioneers hockey team's comeback in the third period fell one goal short as the Pioneers lost 4-3 at the No. 10 Providence College Friars on Friday night at Schneider Arena.

"It was a very tightly-contested game. I was looking at the shot total, and neither team put up a tone of shots," said Richard and Kitzia Goodman Hockey Head Coach David Carle. "There wasn't a lot of open ice. The game opened up a few times for both teams, like on the rush two or three times. Our O-zone play was able to generate a little bit in the second. It was a lot of special teams, but not a lot of overlap special teams."

Denver has another ranked matchup on Saturday as it travels up the highway to play at No. 3 Boston College at 5 p.m. MT. That game will be broadcasted on ESPN+.

Junior Massimo Rizzo scored while DU had an extra attacker with 3:28 remaining in the final stanza, but Providence's two goals earlier in the frame proved to be too much of a deficit for the Pioneers to overcome.

Rizzo also added an assist to bring his point total for the season to nine after three contests (one goal, eight assists). Junior Jack Devine added two points as well with his third assist and fifth tally of the campaign; he is now tied for second in the nation in goals.

Shai Buium also scored, while Zeev Buium, Aidan Thompson, Boston Buckberger and Sean Behrens all contributed one helper each.

Denver goaltender Matt Davis made 14 saves, as neither team reached double-figures in shots in any of the three periods. DU outshot PC 24-18 in the contests.

The teams traded goals through the first two periods, with Shai Buium opening the night's scoring on the power play at 6:19 by burying a one-time shot off a pass from his brother Zeev.

Hudson Malinoski tallied with the man advantage as well for the Friars with 1:44 remaining in the initial stanza, but Devine put Denver back in front as he whacked in a loose puck midway through second.

Jaroslav Chmelars' evened the score for PC at 14:00 of the middle period before teammates Riley Duran and Tanner Adams notched markers in the third. Adams' goal at 14:52 of the third came on the power play and was the game-winner, but it also came on a fortitudinous bounce as it was a pass through the slot that caromed off a DU player and into the net.

Adams finished with three points as he also added two assists. Goaltender Philip Svedebäck made 21 stops.

PC went 2-for-5 on the power play, while Denver scored with the man advantage for a third straight contest but finished the night 1-for-9 in man-up situations.

UP NEXT: The Pioneers wrap up the road trip in New England on Saturday against No. 3 Boston College at 5 p.m. MT. The DU's first games at Magness Arena are next weekend, Oct. 27-28, as it hosts NCAA-newcomer Augustana in the home opener before taking on in-state foe Air Force the next night to wrap up Homecoming Weekend.
