GRAND FORKS, North Dakota – The University of Denver women's soccer team (9-2-6, 5-1-2 Summit) posted a 3-3 draw at North Dakota in its regular-season finale to secure at least a share of the 2023 Summit League Regular Season Championship on Sunday.
The result at UND guaranteed Denver at least a tie atop the Summit League table – pending the result of October 24's rescheduled match between South Dakota State and Omaha – giving DU its sixth-straight Summit League regular-season title and its eighth overall. It is also the 14
th regular-season conference title in Denver's Division I history.
UPDATE FROM TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24: Following the completion the final Summit League regular-season match between South Dakota State and Omaha, Denver claimed the outright Summit League regular-season title, sitting atop the final standings with 17 points, two clear of SDSU. It is the fifth-straight year that DU has won the regular-season championship outright and its eighth time overall.
In Sunday's match, freshman
Liv Moritz opened the scoring in the 10
th minute before North Dakota's Amelia Loeffler gave the Fighting Hawks the lead with a 23
rd-minute equalizer and a penalty kick in the 34th minute.
Denver drew even just one minute after the converted PK when UND headed in an own goal off a DU corner kick. Just over three minutes into the second half, graduate student
Kaitlyn Glover put DU ahead once again; but UND's Loeffler completed her hat trick with just 41 seconds left in the match on a last-minute corner.
SIGNIFICANT STATS:
- Glover and Moritz remain tied atop DU's leaderboard for most goals scored, each adding their seventh of the season on Sunday.
- With her assist on Glover's goal, senior Vanessa Murray became the standalone team leader for assists this season with five.
- Junior Riley Baker added her fourth assist of the season, pulling her into a three-way tie with Glover and Moritz for second-most on the team.
- Five Pioneers finished with three shot attempts on the day including graduate student Camryn MacMillan, who put all three of her shots on goal.
- Junior Ella Frost made her first start of the season and the 19th of her career.
- Denver finished with 20 shots for the third time this season, nine of which were on target.
FIRST HALF:
10' | Frost helped settle a bouncing ball off a DU free kick and sent it to sophomore Lily O'Grady. She then perfectly threaded the ball between two UND defenders and connected with Moritz in the middle of the six-yard box where the freshman easily sent it past the keeper.
23' | UND intercepted a pass from senior
Megan Prazich, setting up an equalizer from Amelia Loeffler from the top of the box.
27' | Just 30 seconds after subbing into the match, junior
Samantha Dreiling gets a shot off, but the UND keeper made the save at right goal post.
34' | After a challenge from freshman
Molly Wissman, there was a scramble inside the box and an eventual stoppage of play after DU cleared the ball. The officials determined a foul was committed inside the penalty area and awarded a penalty to UND, which Loeffler converted.
35' | Exactly one minute later, Denver earned the equalizer on a UND own goal from a DU corner.
SECOND HALF:
49' | Murray headed a UND clear attempt from the edge of the 18-yard box. Baker settled the ball and heel-kicked it back toward Glover, who finished the job with a quick shot toward the far post.
53' | Frost had a look at the left post with a curling shot from 20 yards out, but the UND keeper snagged it away.
72' | Dreiling rang one off the crossbar with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.
78' | Baker tried a backward heel kick again and connected with senior
McKenna Dannenhauer, but her shot sailed high.
90' | UND earned a last-minute corner kick that Loeffler headed in for the equalizer with only 41 seconds left on the clock.
WHAT'S NEXT:
DU (9-2-6, 5-1-2 Summit) has secured the No. 1 seed in the 2023 Summit League Championship and will host the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds on October 27-29. Denver will receive a bye into the semifinals and now awaits final selections and seedings for the tournament.
