Moritz named Newcomer of the Year; three Pioneers land first-team honors

DENVER – The University of Denver women's soccer team earned nine combined All-Summit League Team honors for the 2023 season while freshman Liv Moritz was named the 2023 Summit League Newcomer of the Year, the Summit League announced on Thursday.

Moritz was also one of three DU student-athletes to be named to the 2023 Summit League All-Newcomer Team. Seven more Pioneers collected first-team, second-team or honorable mention nods on the All-Summit League Team.

Denver's nine All-Summit League Team honorees (including the All-Newcomer Team) is the most in the League this season, while DU joined Omaha in earning the most first-team nods with three apiece.

Moritz had a breakout freshman campaign for Denver, scoring a team lead-tying seven goals and 18 points while also posting a DU-best two game winners. Her seven goals are tied for ninth-most nationally by a Division I freshman. She started all 17 matches during the regular season for Denver and logged at least one shot in all but five games. The Vail, Colorado, native also landed at No. 34 on the Top Drawer Soccer All-Freshman midseason rankings.

She is the fourth Denver player to be named the Summit League Newcomer/Freshman of the Year and the first since Sami Feller in 2018. DU won the award three years running with Meg Halvorson in 2017 and Hannah Adler in 2016.

Crockett captured her second All-Summit League Team honor and her first, first-team nod after playing in all 17 matches for Denver including 16 starts and 14 times playing the full 90 minutes. She scored one goal – the game winner at St. Thomas – in a three-point showing for the senior. She was an instrumental part of Denver's back line that allowed just eight goals and secured two cleansheets in League play.

Glover started all 17 matches this season to secure her third-straight first-team honor and her fourth overall All-Summit League nod, not including her 2019 All-Freshman Team recognition. The graduate student tied with Moritz atop Denver's leaderboard for goals (7) and points (18) while moving into the top 10 in DU's Division I record book for career matches played (92), game winners (11) and goals (29).

Murray collected her first career All-League Team honor after playing in every match for the second year in a row, starting in all 17 this season and playing the full 90 minutes 11 times – six of which came in Summit League matches. Her goal against Northern Colorado became the first game winner of her career, and she finished the regular season with seven total points with assists in four matches including the regular-season finale at North Dakota.

Dreiling made her long-anticipated collegiate debut after missing the last two campaigns with season-ending injuries. She played in all 17 matches while starting in the first 16. She scored two goals and finished with seven total points in the regular season while tallying at least one shot in all but two matches including seven of DU's eight Summit League matches. Her five shots against Oral Roberts were the second-most by a DU player in a single match this season.

Gallegos, a 2022 All-Summit League Honorable Mention and 2019 All-Freshman Team honoree, collected second-team recognition this season despite missing the back half of League play with a season-ending injury. Prior to her injury, she had started in all 13 matches and played the full 90 minutes in 11 of them. As DU's starting center back, she played a critical role in five of DU's shutouts and twice held opponents without a corner kick.

MacMillan was Denver's starting forward in all 17 matches in 2023, helping her earn All-League honors for the third time and the second year in a row. She scored two goals and added three assists on the season while posting at least three shots in four matches including at North Dakota when all three landed on target. She joined Glover in moving up in DU's record books this year with her 82 matches played and 23 career goals.

Baker has now earned All-Summit League recognition in all three of her seasons after earning first-team honors in 2022 and a spot on the All-Newcomer Team in 2021. She, too, started in every match of the regular season and finished with three goals scored including her first career game winner against Oral Roberts. Twice, she had four shots in a match and set a career high with three shots on goal against South Dakota.

Wissman became the fifth Denver freshman to start the season in goal and the first since 2016, collecting six cleansheets during the season, half of which came in Summit League matches. She made a season-best seven saves at [RV/-] Milwaukee and added four more against both Colorado State and North Dakota State.

Denver won its eighth Summit League regular-season crown and its fifth-straight outright championship in 2023, securing the No. 1 seed for the Summit League Women's Soccer Championship. DU will host the quarterfinal match between No. 4-seed Omaha and No. 5-seed South Dakota on Friday, October 27, at 1 p.m. MT. The winner of Friday's match will play No. 1-seeded Denver in the semifinals on Sunday, October 29, at 1 p.m. MT.
