DENVER – The University of Denver hockey team moved up to No. 3 in the country in both national polls as the first rankings of the 2023-24 season were released on Monday.
DU was elevated from No. 4 in the USCHO.com preseason poll and jumped from No. 5 in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live's early-season rankings. Denver earned four first-place votes and 910 points total in USCHO.com and had one first-place nod and 654 points in USA Hockey/The Rink Live's list.
The Pioneers won both games in its opening weekend in Fairbanks, Alaska, defeating the Nanooks 7-3 on Saturday in the season opener before picking up a 5-2 victory on Sunday.
Boston University (967 points) remains as the top-ranked team in the country in USCHO.com poll while Minnesota jumped the Terriers for the top spot in The Rink Live's rankings, earning one more first-place vote and point (655 vs. 654 points).
The NCHC was tied for the most second-most teams ranked with the Big Ten, with each conference having five and tied for the most in the top 10 with three (Hockey East has six in top 20 and two in top 10). North Dakota (7/7), St. Cloud State (10/9) and Western Michigan (12/12) join Denver in the top 15 while Minnesota Duluth (17/18) rounds out the rankings for the NCHC. Omaha and Colorado College also received votes
The Pioneers have a bye this weekend before traveling to New England for a pair of top-15 matchups. Denver faces No. 13 Providence on Friday, Oct. 20 before taking on No. 4 Boston College on Saturday, Oct. 21
About the USCHO.com Poll: The rankings are compiled weekly and consists of 50 voters, including coaches and media professionals from across the country.
About the USA Hockey/The Rink Live Poll: The rankings are conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the six NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey.
