Daniel Sancho Arbizu fell in his opening match at the 2023 ITA National Fall Championships on Wednesday.
Sancho Arbizu faced off against Ohio State's Jack Anthrop, who is ranked No. 81 in the country, and dropped their round of 32 match, 6-4 7-6(7). After giving up a break in the fifth game of the first set, Sancho Arbizu fought back to level the set at 4-all before a couple double faults gave Anthrop what would be the set's decisive break.
In the second set, Sancho Arbizu broke for a 3-1 lead and then served for it at 5-2 before Anthrop rallied to win four straight games. Sancho Arbizu held to force a tiebreak that would be tightly contested all the way through before Anthrop sealed the win at 9-7.
Sancho Arbizu will continue play in San Diego on Thursday with a consolation match against No. 4-seed and No. 15-ranked Michael Zheng from Columbia.
