DENVER, CO -- Emily Counsel and Emma Smith combined to score 25 total points - 61 percent of Denver's points - but the Pioneers fell to the Wyoming Cowgirls 58-41 at home Tuesday.
Counsel led the Pioneers (1-2) with 15 points. Smith added 10 points and three steals and Jordan Jones chipped in as well with seven points, six rebounds and two steals.
Denver's defense held Wyoming to only 35.8 percent shooting from the field, including 25 percent from beyond the arc.

Denver kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 9-8.
The Pioneers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 23-16 halftime deficit.
Wyoming continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 29-19 advantage before Denver went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Counsel, to trim its deficit to 29-25 with 5:00 to go in the third. Wyoming countered and stretched its lead to 41-28 heading into the fourth. Denver knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 12 total points.
Wyoming kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 48-33 advantage before Denver went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Angelina Robles' jumper, to shrink the deficit to 48-39 with 3:32 to go in the contest. Wyoming responded and outscored the Pioneers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 58-41. Denver took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 13 points in the paint.
