DENVER, CO --Jordan Jones earned a career-high 29 points, but the Denver women's basketball team fell to the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears 90-84 at home Friday.
The Pioneers (1-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Jones, who had 29 points and nine rebounds. Makayla Minett added 16 points, eight rebounds and two blocks and Emma Smith chipped in as well with 15 points, four assists and two steals.
The Denver offense was very productive from three point land, knocking down 12 threes on 39 attempts. Emily Counsel was the most prolific shooter for the Pioneers, draining four treys in the contest.
How It Happened
After jumping out to an 11-8 advantage, Denver went on a 6-0 run with 6:05 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 17-8. The Pioneers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 25-19 advantage. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 25 points.
Central Arkansas rallied to take a 36-31 lead before Denver went on a 7-0 run starting at the 2:44 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Jones, to take a 38-36 lead. The Sugar Bears then came roaring back to take a 41-38 lead heading into halftime.
Denver's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Pioneers faced a 66-51 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.
Denver narrowed its deficit to 86-75 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Jones' layup, to shrink the deficit to 86-80 with 36 seconds to go in the contest. The Pioneers were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 90-84. Denver pulled down nine offensive rebounds to score 12 second chance points out of 33 total in the period
