MOBILE, AL --The Denver men's basketball team fell to the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars 77-74 at Mitchell Center Thursday on Ray'Sean Taylor's buzzer-beating 3-pointer with only two seconds left on the clock.
The Pioneers (2-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Tommy Bruner, who had 33 points and two steals. Isaiah Addo-Ankrah added 10 points off of the bench and DeAndre Craig chipped in as well with 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Denver grabbed 40 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to SIU-Edwardsville's 36, led by eight boards from Touko Tainamo. The Pioneers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 16 rebounds into 24 second chance points.
Denver did a great job disrupting SIU-Edwardsville shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Isaiah Carr's four rejections led the way individually for the Pioneers.
How It Happened
After playing to a 17-17 tie, Denver went on a 6-0 run with 11:50 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Addo-Ankrah, to take a 23-17 lead. The Pioneers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 43-37.
SIU-Edwardsville kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 46-37 advantage before Denver went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Bruner's three, to shrink the deficit to 46-45 with 17:40 to go in the contest. SIU-Edwardsville responded and outscored the Pioneers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 77-74. Denver got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 11 of its 37 total points.
