Denver Suffers 82-75 Loss to South Alabama

The Pioneers turned it over a DI-low one time in the finale of the Jaguar Classic on Friday

MOBILE, Ala. --The University of Denver men's basketball team comeback attempt came up short in an 82-75 loss to the South Alabama Jaguars on the road Friday.

The Pioneers (2-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Tommy Bruner, who had 18 points. Touko Tainamo tacked on 13 points and six rebounds and Jaxon Brenchley helped out with 11 points and six rebounds.

Denver did an excellent job taking care of the basketball, dishing out nine assists while turning the ball over just one time. Brenchley's three assists were the most for the Pioneers.

Notes:

  • In the Pioneers third game in less than 48 hours, nine different Pioneers scored in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Denver had no turnovers in the first half, the first 20-minute half without a turnover since January 19, 2013 against Utah State.
  • DU turned it over just one time in the game (:48/2nd), the lowest total in the program's Division I history.
  • The Pioneers trailed by as many as 12 in the first half, but overturned the deficit by the first media timeout of the second half.

Jaxon Brenchley finished with 11 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

  • Brenchley finished in double figures for the third time this season and the seventh time in his career.
  • Brenchley's six rebounds tied a career-high for the graduate student.

Touko Tainamo finished with 13 points

  • Tainamo finished in double figures for the fourth time this season and the 33rd time in his career. 
Tommy Bruner finished with 18 points
  • Bruner finished in double figures for the seventh-straight game and the 77th time in his career.
Ben Bowen finished with a career-high 10 points and two blocks
  • Bowen finished in double figures for the first time in his career.
  • Bowen's two blocks were a career-high.  

DeAndre Craig had a season-best five steals to go with seven points and four rebounds.

  • Craig's five steals tied for the eighth-most in a game in the Pioneers Division I history.

How It Happened:

After falling behind 31-21, Denver went on a 7-0 run with 2:52 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Brenchley, to narrow its deficit to 31-28. The Pioneers deficit remained the same as they entered halftime trailing 33-30.

South Alabama kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 65-56 advantage before Denver went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Bruner's three, to shrink the deficit to 65-62 with 6:56 to go in the contest. South Alabama responded and outscored the Pioneers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 82-75. Denver made the most of 13 offensive rebounds to tack on 11 second chance points out of 45 total in the period.

Up Next:
Denver will have the rest of the weekend off before welcoming Colorado Christian to Hamilton Gymnasium on Wednesday, November 22, at 7 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast live on the Summit League Network and 104.3 The Fan HD3.
