Tainamo and Bruner lead Denver past Colorado Christian 100-68

DENVER -- Touko Tainamo scored 31 points and Tommy Bruner added 27 and the Denver men's basketball team beat the Colorado Christian Cougars 100-68 at home Wednesday inside Hamilton Gymnasium.

Tainamo and Bruner's stellar scoring performances led the Pioneers (3-3) in the contest. Tainamo tacked on five rebounds and two steals and Bruner added five assists. DeAndre Craig also helped out with five points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Denver utilized excellent ball movement in Wednesday's game, piling up 20 assists on 34 made field goals. Bruner's five assists were the most for the Pioneers.

Denver's defense held Colorado Christian to only 36.5 percent shooting from the field, including 16.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Notes:

  • The Pioneers shot well from three point range, knocking down nine of 20 long range attempts.
  • The Denver bench made an impact by adding 31 points to its scoring output.
  • The Denver defense forced 17 turnovers.
  • Denver turned the ball over eight times while dishing out 20 assists, finishing in single-digits turnovers for the third-straight game.
  • Denver got a team-high eight rebounds from DeAndre Craig.

Touko Tainamo finished with 31 points and 5 rebounds.

  • Tainamo finished in double figures for the second-straight game, the fifth time this season and the 34th time in his career.
  • Tainamo finished with 20+ points for the third time this season and the fifth time in his career.
  • Tainamo had 30+ points for the second time in his career.

Tommy Bruner finished with 27 points and 5 assists.

  • Bruner finished in double figures for the eighth-straight game and the 78th time in his Pioneer career.
  • Bruner had 20+ points for the fourth time this season and the 12th time in his career.
  • Bruner had 5+ assists for the 29th time in his career.

Jaxon Brenchley had 6 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals

  • Brenchley's three steals were a career-high.
  • Brenchley's seven rebounds were a career-high.

How It Happened:
After falling behind 27-26, Denver went on a 9-0 run with 4:30 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Tainamo, to take a 35-27 lead. The Pioneers then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 43-31 advantage. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 43 points.

Following intermission, Denver kept widening that lead, expanding it to 83-60 before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 91-60 with 4:17 to go in the contest. The Pioneers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 100-68 win. Denver got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 26 of its 57 total points.
