SAN MARCOS, TX --The Denver women's basketball team fell short in a 72-46 loss to the Texas State Bobcats on the road Thursday.
The Pioneers (2-7) had two players score in double figures, led by Emily Counsel, who had 13 points and two blocks. Makayla Minett added 10 points and eight rebounds off of the bench and Emma Smith added nine points and two steals.
How It Happened
Denver struggled out of the gate, falling behind 22-13 at the end of the first quarter.
The Pioneers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 42-22 halftime deficit.
Denver's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Pioneers faced a 58-32 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Des[ote the deficit, Denver played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 10 points in the paint.
Texas State widened its lead in the fourth, constructing a 66-39 advantage before Denver went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Minett's layup, to shrink the deficit to 66-44 with 2:42 to go in the contest. Texas State responded and outscored the Pioneers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 72-46. The Pioneers took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
