Big games from Counsel, Jones Not Enough in Denver's 50-47 Loss to UC Irvine

IRVINE, CA --Emily Counsel and Jordan Jones combined to score 29 total points - 61.7 percent of Denver's points - but the Pioneers fell to the UC Irvine Anteaters 50-47 on the road Saturday.

The Pioneers (1-6) had two players score in double figures, led by Counsel, who had 18 points. Jones tacked on 11 points, nine rebounds and two steals and Emma Smith added five points and two steals.

Lauren With pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Denver, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into six second chance points.

Denver's defense held UC Irvine to only 18.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 25 percent from the field.

How It Happened

After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Denver went on an 8-0 run with 8:28 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Angelina Robles, to take a 10-2 lead. The Pioneers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-12 advantage. Denver did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.

Denver kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 9:32 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Counsel, to increase its lead to 23-12. The Anteaters then came roaring back to take a 26-23 lead heading into halftime.

Denver came out of halftime on fire, going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Counsel, to grab a 29-26 lead with 7:02 to go in the third. The Anteaters then rallied to tie it at 38-38 heading into the fourth quarter. Denver knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 15 total points.

UC Irvine then snagged a 48-42 advantage before Denver responded by going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Reagan Pahl's three, to shrink the deficit to 48-47 with two seconds to go in the contest. UC Irvine responded and outscored the Pioneers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 50-47. Denver took advantage of three UC Irvine turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
