DENVER, CO --Emily Counsel scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Denver women's basketball team past the Stetson Hatters, 74-52, in hamilton Gymnasium on Saturday.
The Pioneers (2-6) had four players score in double figures, led by Counsel, who had 21 points. Angelina Robles added a season-high 12 points and tied her career-high seven rebounds and Jordan Jones helped out with 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Led by Lauren With's two offensive rebounds, Denver did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 16 second chance points.
Denver forced 13 Stetson turnovers. The Pioneers turned those takeaways into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Jones' two steals led the way for Denver.
How It Happened
After falling behind 14-5, Denver went on a 6-0 run with 4:53 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Counsel, to narrow its deficit to 14-11. The Pioneers deficit remained the same as they entered the second quarter trailing 19-16.
Denver then started off the second quarter by going on a 10-0 run to take a 26-19 lead. The Pioneers proceeded to tack on three points to that lead and enjoyed a 40-30 advantage heading into halftime. Denver was strong from deep in the period, knocking down six three-point shots to account for 18 of its 24 points.
Following intermission, Denver continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 46-34 before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Emma Smith, to expand its lead further to 52-34 with 5:38 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Hatters had cut into that lead, but the Pioneers still entered the fourth quarter with a 58-44 edge. Denver knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 18 total points.
Denver kept its lead intact before going on a 10-0 run to grow the lead to 68-46 with 3:59 to go in the contest. The Pioneers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 74-52 win. Denver took advantage of three Stetson turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
