Denver women move up to sixth, while Pioneer men finish fourth

PRINCETON, New Jersey – The University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving programs wrapped up the final night of competition in the 2023 BIG Al Invitational at Denunzio Natatorium on Sunday evening.

Denver's men finished the three-day meet in fourth, while the Pioneer women made strides in the final day to move up to sixth in the team standings.

Event-by-Event Recap
Denver opened the evening with a 12^th-place finish for Nika Spehar in the women's mile, reaching the final wall in 10:14.57.

Kieran Watson led the Denver men's distance swimmers in the mile, clocking in at 15:07.61 to finish second. Will Melsha scored points with a 13^th place finish in 15:37.33.

Denver's women got two into the B-Final of the 200 back on Sunday morning. Darian Koler took 12^th in 1:59.95 and Lilly Zippel clocked in at 2:00.47 to take 15^th.

Dylan Wright got Denver's first win of the weekend with a 1:41.80 to lead the field in the men's 200 back. Liam Simmons scored seven points with a 10^th-place finish, Max Roslin took 14^th and Quinn Collins rounded out Denver's scorers with a 15^th-place finish in the 200 back.

Erika Remington got the Denver women back on the podium in the women's 100 free with her time of 49.93 to take third. Ines Marin took 10^th in 50.37 and Kali Metuzals finished 14^th with a time of 50.81.

Frank Tirone followed up his A-Final qualifying swim on Sunday morning with a seventh-place finish this evening, reaching the wall in 44.25. Donat Fabian continued his impressive weekend with an 11^th-place finish in 44.60.

Jessica Maeda made it back-to-back women's events with podium appearances for the Pioneers with her NCAA B Standard time of 2:09.75 in the women's 200 breast to put her in second. Zoe Lynch took 10^th in 2:18.76, Tenaya Winter finished 15^th in 2:22.92 and Sophia Remington grabbed 16^th in 2:23.20.

Alex Lynch made an A-Final appearance in the men's 200 breast, finishing fifth with a time of 1:56.48. Marco Nosack got a 12^th place finish in 2:00.17 to pickup five more points in the event.

In the women's 200 fly, Sabrina Rachjaibun reached the final wall in 2:01.27 to take seventh. Sarah Turchanik grabbed 11 points with an eighth-place finish in 2:01.76. Mia Moulden and Daniela Alfaro rounded out Denver's point scorers in the event, finishing 11^th and 13^th, respectively.

On the men's side, Brandon Chapman won the B-Final with a time of 1:46.70 to take ninth overall.

The meet concluded with the 400 free relays. Erika Remington, Marin, Metuzals and Lucyshyn combined for a time of 3:21.71 to take fifth. Denver's men's quartet of Tirone, Fabian, Luke Milburn and Nosack combined for a time of 2:57.72 to take sixth.

UP NEXT:
Denver will have the rest of the calendar year off before taking on the Colorado School of Mines in El Pomar Natatorium on Friday, January 5, at 2 p.m. MT.
