The Pioneers return to action after a month off

DENVER – The University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving programs swept the Colorado School of Mines on Friday evening inside El Pomar Natatorium.

Denver won all 28 swimming events in the meet as the Pioneers returned from over a month in-between events.

How it Happened:
Denver opened the meet with a win in the women's 200 medley relay. The quartet of Lilly Zippel, Zoe Lynch, Emmy Francell and Mary O'Neil combined for a time of 1:37.27 to beat out the Pioneers A-Relay and take the event victory.

On the men's side, the A-Relay of Dylan Wright, Alex Lynch, Nikola Tadic and Donat Fabian earned a time of 1:32.39 to take the relay victory.

In the first distance swim of the afternoon, Daniela Alfaro led a trio of Pios that swept the podium in the 1000 free with her time of 10:29.84.

Joseph Purdy and Joseph Hancock delivered a 1-2 punch in the men's 1000 free with times of 9:40.79 and 9:50.23, respectively.

Denver's women took a podium sweep in the women's 200 free, led by Sabrina Rachjaibun's time of 1:53.15. Nika Spehar and Tenaya Winter swam the event in 1:56.08 and 1:56.15 to take second and third.

Kieran Watson led a Pioneer trio in the top three in the men's 200 free with a time of 1:40.43 to edge out teammate Marco Nosack who took second in 1:40.59.
Ines Marin got her first win of the afternoon in the women's 100 back, reaching the wall in 56.86. Zippel took second in 57.37.

Wright led the men's backstrokers in the 100 with his time of 49.99. Liam Simmons finished second in 50.67.

Jessica Maeda turned in an impressive swim in the 100 breast, clocking in at 1:03.55 to take the victory by nearly two seconds. Fabian once again won the 100 on the men's side, leading a Pioneer trio that finished within a second of eachother for the top three times.

In the 200 fly, Mia Moulden clocked in at 2:08.45 to take the event win over teammates Mina Ada Solaker (2:08.94) and Sarah Turchanik (2:09.62).

Brandon Chapman won the men's 200 fly by nearly 2.5 seconds, clocking in at 1:53.53 to reach the wall in first.

In the first sprint free of the early evening, Megan Lucyshyn won the 50 free with a time of 23.61.

Frank Tirone and Tadic finished 1-2 in the men's 50 free sprint with times of 20.73 and 21.07, respectively.

After a break, the meet turned right back to the 100 free. Denver earned the top four spots in the event, let by a 51.99 swim from Kali Metuzals. O'Neil completed the 100 in 52.73 to earn the second-fastest time.

On the men's side in the 100 free, Luke Milburn edged out the field with a 56.15. Fabian was right behind him in 46.39 and Tommy Hancock swam the 100 in 46.84.

Darian Koler claimed a victory in the 200 back on Friday, swimming the event in 2:04.06. In the men's 200 back, Nico Morton clocked in at 1:52.18, just ahead of his teammate Max Roslin who finished the event in 1:52.82.

In the women's 200 breast, Maeda completed the 100/200 sweep with a time of 2:19.79. Alex Lynch swam the 200 in 2:02.15 on the men's side to take first as well.

Back to the distance events, Nika Spehar edged out Zippel by 0.25 seconds to take the event win in the 500 free, reaching the final wall in 5:09.07.

In the men's 500, Wright had a little more separation from his closest competitor in the event, earning a time of 4:37.56. Purdy finished in 4:39.76 to earn the second-fastest time.

Ines Marin earned a 100 fly victory, clocking in at 56.16 to take the top spot. Chapman and Luca Foord had a close 1-2 on the men's side, finishing with times of 51.26 and 51.61, respectively.

In the final individual event of the evening, Rachjaibun won the 200 IM with a 2:09.22 to edge out Turchanik's 2:09.47.

Marco Nosack won the men's 200 IM with a 1:52.42 to setup the meet for the final relays of the evening.

Denver swept the 400 free relays to complete the meet as the Pioneers turn their focus to a big double dual next weekend in El Pomar.

Up Next:
Denver will stay home next weekend for a two-day meet against Wyoming and BYU. The diving portion of next weekend's meet begins at 2 p.m. MT Friday before the swimming portion begins at 5 p.m. MT on January 12.
